An intensive care unit (ICU), also known as an intensive therapy unit (ITU), or intensive treatment unit (ITU) is a specialized department in a hospital that provides intensive-care medicine, treatment and specific procedures.

We at Choithram Memorial Hospital offer a separate intensive care unit for all patients. Intensive care units (ICUs) have a very simple purpose, even though their practice seems complicated at first glance. A patient is kept in the ICU when the health condition becomes vulnerable. Our doctors, surgeons and nurses, who work in the ICU, routinely rotate through the departments to provide intensive monitoring and medical treatment to patients day and night.

Those admitted to the intensive care unit have life-threatening injuries or diseases. In intensive care, patients can only be transferred to the ward if their condition stabilizes.

In potentially life-threatening conditions, we provide 24/7 care to patients who require continuous monitoring by a multidisciplinary team. In cases such as hemodynamic instability (hypertension/hypotension), airway or respiratory compromises (such as ventilator support), acute renal failure, potentially lethal cardiac arrhythmias, multiple organ system failures, or when a patient is deemed too unstable, we even move them to a highly intensively monitored unit immediately.

The number of acute cases in Indian hospitals is increasing as a result of traumas, and medical, surgical, gynecological, and pediatric emergencies. Hence, adequate resources are required, including well-equipped and sophisticated emergency rooms manned with agile doctors, paramedics, and staff nurses capable of handling a wide range of situations.

Emergency care does not begin and end in the emergency room because emergencies may happen anywhere and everywhere, so comprehensive care from pre-hospital support through patient transfer to the intensive care unit is necessary. Equipment for the ICU

The equipment in the ICU is mostly aimed at providing life support and supporting different organs in the body (such as the lungs, the heart, and the kidneys). Some of these include, but are not limited to:

• A cardiac monitor monitors the heart's vital signs
• Mechanical ventilator
• An infusion pump is used to regulate the flow of medication titrated through a drip and through the pump itself
• Syringe pumps used where a syringe is used to titrate the medication to the patient
• Suction machines
